A nutritionist takes your entire health history, including things like, whether or not you’ve traveled, whether or not you were breast-fed, and how often you have a bowel movement. Although these questions can at times be uncomfortable, they help the holistic nutritionist best understand how you’ve gotten to where you are and how to help you from exactly where you are now.

A nutritionist makes individual recommendations based on who you are, not what the food guide says, not based on the latest fad diet, not based on what the internet is saying. For example, when a client comes into see me, I always ask what their favourite foods are and least favourite foods are, because if a client hates their meal plan, it’s not going to work or help them. Nutritionists also base meal plans and recommendations for food and supplements on exactly what you are dealing with, for example if someone comes to me with anxiety, their meal plan and recommendations will be different than the person with osteoporosis or infertility.

Nutritionists use food and supplements as medicine. I bet you didn’t think that you’re PCOS could be controlled with food and supplements, did you?!
Your doctor may be recommending Metformin to control your insulin levels, but has your doctor also looked at your cortisol levels, which when elevated cause an increase in insulin levels? These are all factors that a nutritionist takes into account when working with a client. A nutritionist also knows how to support your body when you are on medications.
4. Customized Plan
Holistic Nutritionists are different from other natural health practitioners. For examples, dieticians, who are part of a regulated industry, are required to use Canada’s Food Guide, which can be limiting and doesn’t provide an individualized approach. A nutritionist will sit down with you and provide you with a custom plan, designed JUST FOR YOU!
